ۘ Signs of waqf (pauses)

Waqf (وقف, “stop”) signs tell the reciter where to pause for breath while intending to continue. They appear slightly smaller and raised above the line. Follow them to avoid changing the meaning. Where two signs appear one above the other, give preference to the one on top.

waqf tām — وقف تامّ — “Perfect stop” — the end of a verse. The meaning is complete; stop and take a breath before continuing. Shown by the verse circle.
مـ
waqf lāzim — وقف لازم — “Required stop” — it is absolutely necessary to stop; not stopping can change the meaning (like “Stand! not Sit!” vs “Stand not! Sit!”).
ط
waqf muṭlaq — وقف مطلق — “Absolute stop” — break the breath and voice before continuing. The sentence is not yet complete but more follows before the meaning finishes.
ج
waqf jāʾiz — وقف جائز — “Permissible stop” — better to stop here, but if you do not, that is fine.
ز
waqf mujawwaz — وقف مجوّز — It is better not to stop here.
ص
waqf murakhkhaṣ — وقف مرخّص — “Licensed pause” — continue reading; but if you are tired you may pause for a breath. More desirable to continue than at ز.
صلے
al-waṣl awlā — الوصل أولى — “Continuing is preferable” — it is better to carry on reciting here.
ق
qīla ʿalayhil-waqf — قيل عليه الوقف — It has been said that it is better not to stop here — the sign marks a difference of opinion on whether to stop.
قﻲ
qad yūṣal — قد يوصل — It is better to stop here, but continuing is permissible.
قف
qif — قِف — “Stop!” — used where the reciter might otherwise continue instead of stopping.
س
saktah — سكتة — “Silence” — stop reciting but do not break the breath before continuing. Obligatory in four places (Sūrah al-Kahf, Yāsīn, al-Qiyāmah and al-Muṭaffifīn).
وقفة
waqfah — وقفة — Pause here longer than at a saktah, again without breaking the breath.
لا
— لا — “No!” — do not stop here, as it would affect the meaning. If it falls at a verse-end it is still better not to stop, but if you do the meaning is alright.
ك
kadhālik — كذلك — “Like that” — apply the previous waqf sign at this position as well.

muʿānaqah — معانقة — “Embracing stop” — triple dots appearing in pairs: stopping at the first forbids stopping at the second (and vice versa), or the meaning becomes incomplete. Stop at one or the other, not both.
— Marks a point where there is a difference of opinion as to whether it is the end of an āyah.
waqf an-nabī ﷺ — وقف النبي ﷺ — Indicates places where the Prophet ﷺ paused.
waqf ghufrān — وقف غفران — It is said that if the reciter and listener make duʿāʾ when pausing here, it will be answered.
waqf manzil — وقف منزل — Also waqf jibrāʾīl — where Jibrīl (peace be upon him) paused at the time of revelation.
۝ Punctuation marks in the Arabic text

Qurʾanic punctuation in the Arabic script uses several symbols indicating variations in methods of qirāʾah (recitation). These symbols, known as the ʿAlāmāt al-Waqf (signs for stops), are briefly described below.

Shows the end of a verse — a pause is a must.
مـ
Waqf Lāzim — The stop at which the word and meaning give a complete sense (a “complete stop”): the utterance is complete and separated from what follows.
ط
Waqf Jāʾiz, al-Waqf Awlā — May or may not stop, but the first preference is to stop. (The “sufficient stop”: stopping or continuing is permissible, yet stopping is preferable, since the phrase can stand by itself.)
ج
Waqf Jāʾiz — May or may not stop at the place indicated (no preference either way).
ز
It is better not to stop here.
Breaking the voice at a Qurʾanic word for a brief moment without taking a breath — at two counts (nearly two seconds).
صلے
Waqf Jāʾiz, al-Waṣl Awlā — May or may not stop at the place indicated, but the first preference is not to stop.
ق
It is better not to stop here.
صل
Better to stop.
قف
It is better to take a pause.
س
Stop the vocal sound for a moment without breaking the breath.
وقفة

  1. 68:1

    نٓ وَالۡقَلَمِ وَمَا يَسۡطُرُوۡنَۙ ۱

    Nun. By the pen and what they inscribe,

    مَاۤ اَنۡتَ بِـنِعۡمَةِ رَبِّكَ بِمَجۡنُوۡنٍۚ ۲

    You are not, [O Muhammad], by the favor of your Lord, a madman.

    وَاِنَّ لَكَ لَاَجۡرًا غَيۡرَ مَمۡنُوۡنٍۚ ۳

    And indeed, for you is a reward uninterrupted.

    وَاِنَّكَ لَعَلٰى خُلُقٍ عَظِيۡمٍ ۴

    And indeed, you are of a great moral character.

    فَسَتُبۡصِرُ وَيُبۡصِرُوۡنَۙ ۵

    So you will see and they will see

    بِاَيِّٮكُمُ الۡمَفۡتُوۡنُ ۶

    Which of you is the afflicted [by a devil].

  7. 68:7

    اِنَّ رَبَّكَ هُوَ اَعۡلَمُ بِمَنۡ ضَلَّ عَنۡ سَبِيۡلِهٖ وَهُوَ اَعۡلَمُ بِالۡمُهۡتَدِيۡنَ ۷

    Indeed, your Lord is most knowing of who has gone astray from His way, and He is most knowing of the [rightly] guided.

  8. 68:8

    فَلَا تُطِعِ الۡمُكَذِّبِيۡنَ ۸

    Then do not obey the deniers.

  9. 68:9

    وَدُّوۡا لَوۡ تُدۡهِنُ فَيُدۡهِنُوۡنَ ۹

    They wish that you would soften [in your position], so they would soften [toward you].

    وَلَا تُطِعۡ كُلَّ حَلَّافٍ مَّهِيۡنٍۙ ۱۰

    And do not obey every worthless habitual swearer

    هَمَّازٍ مَّشَّآءٍۢ بِنَمِيۡمٍۙ ۱۱

    [And] scorner, going about with malicious gossip -

    مَّنَّاعٍ لِّلۡخَيۡرِ مُعۡتَدٍ اَثِيۡمٍۙ ۱۲

    A preventer of good, transgressing and sinful,

    عُتُلٍّ ۢ بَعۡدَ ذٰلِكَ زَنِيۡمٍۙ ۱۳

    Cruel, moreover, and an illegitimate pretender.

  14. 68:14

    اَنۡ كَانَ ذَا مَالٍ وَّبَنِيۡنَؕ ۱۴

    Because he is a possessor of wealth and children,

    اِذَا تُتۡلٰى عَلَيۡهِ اٰيٰتُنَا قَالَ اَسَاطِيۡرُ الۡاَوَّلِيۡنَ ۱۵

    When Our verses are recited to him, he says, "Legends of the former peoples."

  16. 68:16

    سَنَسِمُهٗ عَلَى الۡخُـرۡطُوۡمِ ۱۶

    We will brand him upon the snout.

  17. 68:17

    اِنَّا بَلَوۡنٰهُمۡ كَمَا بَلَوۡنَاۤ اَصۡحٰبَ الۡجَـنَّةِۚ اِذۡ اَقۡسَمُوۡا لَيَصۡرِمُنَّهَا مُصۡبِحِيۡنَۙ ۱۷

    Indeed, We have tried them as We tried the companions of the garden, when they swore to cut its fruit in the [early] morning

    وَلَا يَسۡتَثۡنُوۡنَ ۱۸

    Without making exception.

    فَطَافَ عَلَيۡهَا طَآٮِٕفٌ مِّنۡ رَّبِّكَ وَهُمۡ نَآٮِٕمُوۡنَ ۱۹

    So there came upon the garden an affliction from your Lord while they were asleep.

    فَاَصۡبَحَتۡ كَالصَّرِيۡمِۙ ۲۰

    And it became as though reaped.

    فَتَـنَادَوۡا مُصۡبِحِيۡنَۙ ۲۱

    And they called one another at morning,

  22. 68:22

    اَنِ اغۡدُوۡا عَلٰى حَرۡثِكُمۡ اِنۡ كُنۡتُمۡ صٰرِمِيۡنَ ۲۲

    [Saying], "Go early to your crop if you would cut the fruit."

  23. 68:23

    فَانۡطَلَقُوۡا وَهُمۡ يَتَخَافَتُوۡنَۙ ۲۳

    So they set out, while lowering their voices,

    اَنۡ لَّا يَدۡخُلَنَّهَا الۡيَوۡمَ عَلَيۡكُمۡ مِّسۡكِيۡنٌۙ ۲۴

    [Saying], "There will surely not enter it today upon you [any] poor person."

  25. 68:25

    وَّغَدَوۡا عَلٰى حَرۡدٍ قٰدِرِيۡنَ ۲۵

    And they went early in determination, [assuming themselves] able.

  26. 68:26

    فَلَمَّا رَاَوۡهَا قَالُوۡۤا اِنَّا لَـضَآلُّوۡنَۙ ۲۶

    But when they saw it, they said, "Indeed, we are lost;

    بَلۡ نَحۡنُ مَحۡرُوۡمُوۡنَ ۲۷

    Rather, we have been deprived."

  28. 68:28

    قَالَ اَوۡسَطُهُمۡ اَلَمۡ اَقُلۡ لَّكُمۡ لَوۡلَا تُسَبِّحُوۡنَ ۲۸

    The most moderate of them said, "Did I not say to you, 'Why do you not exalt [Allah]?' "

  29. 68:29

    قَالُوۡا سُبۡحٰنَ رَبِّنَاۤ اِنَّا كُنَّا ظٰلِمِيۡنَ ۲۹

    They said, "Exalted is our Lord! Indeed, we were wrongdoers."

  30. 68:30

    فَاَقۡبَلَ بَعۡضُهُمۡ عَلٰى بَعۡضٍ يَّتَلَاوَمُوۡنَ ۳۰

    Then they approached one another, blaming each other.

    قَالُوۡا يٰوَيۡلَنَاۤ اِنَّا كُنَّا طٰغِيۡنَ ۳۱

    They said, "O woe to us; indeed we were transgressors.

  32. 68:32

    عَسٰى رَبُّنَاۤ اَنۡ يُّبۡدِلَـنَا خَيۡرًا مِّنۡهَاۤ اِنَّاۤ اِلٰى رَبِّنَا رٰغِبُوۡنَ ۳۲

    Perhaps our Lord will substitute for us [one] better than it. Indeed, we are toward our Lord desirous."

  33. 68:33

    كَذٰلِكَ الۡعَذَابُؕ وَلَعَذَابُ الۡاٰخِرَةِ اَكۡبَرُۘ لَوۡ كَانُوۡا يَعۡلَمُوۡنَ ۳۳

    Such is the punishment [of this world]. And the punishment of the Hereafter is greater, if they only knew.

  34. 68:34

    اِنَّ لِلۡمُتَّقِيۡنَ عِنۡدَ رَبِّهِمۡ جَنّٰتِ النَّعِيۡمِ ۳۴

    Indeed, for the righteous with their Lord are the Gardens of Pleasure.

  35. 68:35

    اَفَنَجۡعَلُ الۡمُسۡلِمِيۡنَ كَالۡمُجۡرِمِيۡنَؕ ۳۵

    Then will We treat the Muslims like the criminals?

  36. 68:36

    مَا لَـكُمۡ كَيۡفَ تَحۡكُمُوۡنَۚ ۳۶

    What is [the matter] with you? How do you judge?

    اَمۡ لَـكُمۡ كِتٰبٌ فِيۡهِ تَدۡرُسُوۡنَۙ ۳۷

    Or do you have a scripture in which you learn

    اِنَّ لَـكُمۡ فِيۡهِ لَمَا تَخَيَّرُوۡنَۚ ۳۸

    That indeed for you is whatever you choose?

  39. 68:39

    اَمۡ لَـكُمۡ اَيۡمَانٌ عَلَيۡنَا بَالِغَةٌ اِلٰى يَوۡمِ الۡقِيٰمَةِۙ اِنَّ لَـكُمۡ لَمَا تَحۡكُمُوۡنَۚ ۳۹

    Or do you have oaths [binding] upon Us, extending until the Day of Resurrection, that indeed for you is whatever you judge?

  40. 68:40

    سَلۡهُمۡ اَيُّهُمۡ بِذٰلِكَ زَعِيۡمٌۛۚ ۴۰

    Ask them which of them, for that [claim], is responsible.

    اَمۡ لَهُمۡ شُرَكَآءُۛۚ فَلۡيَاۡتُوۡا بِشُرَكَآٮِٕهِمۡ اِنۡ كَانُوۡا صٰدِقِيۡنَ ۴۱

    Or do they have partners? Then let them bring their partners, if they should be truthful.

  42. 68:42

    يَوۡمَ يُكۡشَفُ عَنۡ سَاقٍ وَّيُدۡعَوۡنَ اِلَى السُّجُوۡدِ فَلَا يَسۡتَطِيۡعُوۡنَۙ ۴۲

    The Day the shin will be uncovered and they are invited to prostration but the disbelievers will not be able,

  43. 68:43

    خَاشِعَةً اَبۡصَارُهُمۡ تَرۡهَقُهُمۡ ذِلَّةٌ ؕ وَقَدۡ كَانُوۡا يُدۡعَوۡنَ اِلَى السُّجُوۡدِ وَهُمۡ سٰلِمُوۡنَ ۴۳

    Their eyes humbled, humiliation will cover them. And they used to be invited to prostration while they were sound.

  44. 68:44

    فَذَرۡنِىۡ وَمَنۡ يُّكَذِّبُ بِهٰذَا الۡحَـدِيۡثِؕ سَنَسۡتَدۡرِجُهُمۡ مِّنۡ حَيۡثُ لَا يَعۡلَمُوۡنَۙ ۴۴

    So leave Me, [O Muhammad], with [the matter of] whoever denies the Qur'an. We will progressively lead them [to punishment] from where they do not know.

  45. 68:45

    وَاُمۡلِىۡ لَهُمۡؕ اِنَّ كَيۡدِىۡ مَتِيۡنٌ ۴۵

    And I will give them time. Indeed, My plan is firm.

    اَمۡ تَسۡـَٔـلُهُمۡ اَجۡرًا فَهُمۡ مِّنۡ مَّغۡرَمٍ مُّثۡقَلُوۡنَۚ ۴۶

    Or do you ask of them a payment, so they are by debt burdened down?

    اَمۡ عِنۡدَهُمُ الۡغَيۡبُ فَهُمۡ يَكۡتُبُوۡنَ ۴۷

    Or have they [knowledge of] the unseen, so they write [it] down?

    فَاصۡبِرۡ لِحُكۡمِ رَبِّكَ وَلَا تَكُنۡ كَصَاحِبِ الۡحُوۡتِۘ اِذۡ نَادٰى وَهُوَ مَكۡظُوۡمٌؕ ۴۸

    Then be patient for the decision of your Lord, [O Muhammad], and be not like the companion of the fish when he called out while he was distressed.

  49. 68:49

    لَوۡلَاۤ اَنۡ تَدٰرَكَهٗ نِعۡمَةٌ مِّنۡ رَّبِّهٖ لَنُبِذَ بِالۡعَرَآءِ وَهُوَ مَذۡمُوۡمٌ ۴۹

    If not that a favor from his Lord overtook him, he would have been thrown onto the naked shore while he was censured.

  50. 68:50

    فَاجۡتَبٰهُ رَبُّهٗ فَجَعَلَهٗ مِنَ الصّٰلِحِيۡنَ ۵۰

    And his Lord chose him and made him of the righteous.

    وَاِنۡ يَّكَادُ الَّذِيۡنَ كَفَرُوۡا لَيُزۡلِقُوۡنَكَ بِاَبۡصَارِهِمۡ لَمَّا سَمِعُوا الذِّكۡرَ وَيَقُوۡلُوۡنَ اِنَّهٗ لَمَجۡنُوۡنٌۘ ۵۱

    And indeed, those who disbelieve would almost make you slip with their eyes when they hear the message, and they say, "Indeed, he is mad."

    وَمَا هُوَ اِلَّا ذِكۡرٌ لِّلۡعٰلَمِيۡنَ ۵۲

    But it is not except a reminder to the worlds.
