Dakar is the capital of Senegal, where over 95% of the population is Muslim and Sufi tariqa membership organises much of religious and social life. The Grande Mosquée de Dakar, inaugurated in 1964 with assistance from King Hassan II of Morocco, remains the city's principal congregational mosque, while the more recent Mosque of the Divinity in Ouakam reflects contemporary Senegalese architectural sensibilities. Dakar is closely tied to the Mouride and Tijaniyya brotherhoods centred respectively in Touba and Tivaouane; the annual Magal pilgrimage to Touba draws several million participants, and the daily life of the capital is shaped by Mouride-affiliated trader networks, taxi cooperatives, and welfare associations. Cheikh Ahmadou Bamba (founder of the Mouridiyya, d. 1927) and Tivaouane's Cheikh Ibrahim Niass (d. 1975) remain definitional figures for many Dakarois Muslims.
