Afghanistan is a Muslim-majority country where Islam is the state religion under successive constitutions, including the post-2021 Taliban administration's framework. Approximately 99.7 percent of the population is Muslim, predominantly Sunni of the Hanafi school, with a significant Twelver Shia minority of roughly 10 to 15 percent concentrated among the Hazara people of the central highlands and the Ismaili Shia communities of Badakhshan. The Blue Mosque (Shrine of Ali) in Mazar-i-Sharif, dating to the twelfth century and rebuilt under the Timurids, is among the most important pilgrimage sites; the Friday Mosque of Herat, founded in 1200 CE, contains some of the oldest surviving Ghurid-era inscriptions in Central Asia. Religious authority is exercised through the Ministry of Hajj and Religious Affairs, with the Council of Ulema in Kabul historically serving as a consultative body. eSalah uses the University of Islamic Sciences, Karachi method for Afghan cities, consistent with regional Hanafi convention and the longstanding practice of Afghan ulema trained in Deobandi and Hanafi seminaries.
