Albania is a Muslim-majority country in southeastern Europe, with approximately 56 to 59 percent of the population identifying as Muslim per the 2011 census, though figures from Pew and independent surveys suggest practicing observance is lower after decades of state atheism under Enver Hoxha (1944–1991). The Muslim community is overwhelmingly Sunni of the Hanafi school, with a substantial Bektashi Sufi presence; the world headquarters of the Bektashi order has been in Tirana since 1925 after its expulsion from Turkey. The Et'hem Bey Mosque in central Tirana, built between 1789 and 1823, was a central site during the 1991 reopening of religious life after communism. The Great Mosque of Tirana, opened in 2024, is now the largest mosque in the Balkans. The Albanian Muslim Community (Komuniteti Mysliman i Shqipërisë), reconstituted in 1991, is the recognized religious authority. eSalah uses the Muslim World League default; the Diyanet method is offered as an alternate given Turkish historical ties.
