Angola has a small but growing Muslim community estimated at approximately 1 to 2.5 percent of the population, with figures contested between government and Pew estimates. Most adherents are recent immigrants from West Africa (Senegal, Mali, Guinea), Lebanon, and South Asia who settled during the post-2002 oil-economy expansion. The Angolan Muslim community has faced legal challenges; the government de-recognized Islam as an official religion in 2013 and ordered the closure of unregistered mosques, though enforcement has been uneven and many congregations continue to operate. The Mesquita Central de Luanda serves as the main congregational center in the capital. The Comunidade Islâmica de Angola represents Sunni Muslims and has applied repeatedly for full state recognition. eSalah uses the Muslim World League default for Angolan cities, appropriate for the Sunni Maliki and Shafi'i practice predominant among the West African and Lebanese-origin communities. Angola is flagged as a country with active legal restrictions on Islamic practice.
