Argentina has the largest Muslim community in South America, estimated at approximately 1 percent of the population or roughly 400,000 to 500,000 people, with some community organizations citing higher figures up to 800,000. The community traces its origins to late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century migration from Ottoman Syria, Lebanon, and Palestine, with a second wave from the Levant in the post-1948 period. The King Fahd Islamic Cultural Center in Buenos Aires, opened in 2000 and built with Saudi government funding, is the largest mosque in Latin America and a major architectural landmark of the Palermo neighborhood. Other significant institutions include the At-Tauhid Mosque in Floresta and the Centro Islámico de la República Argentina (CIRA), founded in 1931 as one of the oldest Islamic organizations in the Americas. The community is predominantly Sunni, with a notable Twelver Shia minority of Lebanese descent. eSalah uses the Muslim World League default for Argentina.
