Armenia has a very small Muslim community, comprising less than 0.5 percent of the population. The country is overwhelmingly Armenian Apostolic Christian, and the Muslim presence today consists largely of resident Iranian students and traders, a small number of Kurdish Yazidis (who are religiously distinct from Muslim Kurds), and Shia Muslim Kurds in the Aragatsotn Province. The historic Blue Mosque (Göy Mosque) in Yerevan, built in 1764–1768 under Persian Safavid governance, is the only functioning mosque in the country and was restored in the 1990s with Iranian government funding; it serves as a cultural center as well as a place of worship. There is no state Islamic authority, and religious life for the Muslim community is administered informally with consular support from Iran. eSalah uses the Muslim World League default for Armenia; users may override to the Tehran or Jafari method given the Iranian-leaning composition of the community in Yerevan.
