Bangladesh is the world's third-largest Muslim-majority country by population, with approximately 91 percent of its 170 million people identifying as Muslim. The community is overwhelmingly Sunni of the Hanafi school, with a small Shia minority and a notable Sufi tradition centered on shrines such as the Hazrat Shah Jalal Dargah in Sylhet, founded in the fourteenth century by the Yemeni saint who is credited with the Islamization of the Sylhet region. The Sixty Dome Mosque (Shat Gombuj Masjid) in Bagerhat, built in the fifteenth century by Khan Jahan Ali, is a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of South Asia's most important medieval Islamic monuments. The Baitul Mukarram National Mosque in Dhaka, completed in 1968, can accommodate over 40,000 worshippers. The Islamic Foundation Bangladesh, established in 1975 under the Ministry of Religious Affairs, is the principal state-affiliated Islamic body. eSalah uses the University of Islamic Sciences, Karachi method for Bangladeshi cities, consistent with regional Hanafi practice and the official BIRTAN-published timetables.
