Muslim World League · Capital: Brussels · 17 regions indexed
Belgium has a Muslim community of approximately 7 to 8 percent of the population, or roughly 870,000 people, drawn predominantly from Moroccan and Turkish migrant communities that settled during the labor recruitment programs of the 1960s and 1970s. The community is heavily concentrated in Brussels (where it constitutes roughly a quarter of the population), Antwerp, Liège, and Charleroi. The Great Mosque of Brussels in the Cinquantenaire Park, originally an 1880 oriental pavilion converted to a mosque in 1978 and managed by Saudi-affiliated Muslim World League until 2018 when management was transferred, is the senior congregational center; its administration has since been reformed under Belgian state oversight. The Islam was legally recognized in 1974, and the Executive of the Muslims of Belgium (Exécutif des Musulmans de Belgique) coordinates official affairs including chaplaincy, halal certification, and Islamic religion classes in public schools. eSalah uses the Muslim World League default for Belgian cities; the Diyanet method is offered as an alternate for predominantly Turkish congregations.
