Belize has a small Muslim community estimated at less than 0.5 percent of the population, numbering approximately 500 to 1,500 adherents. The community is concentrated in Belize City and includes both African-Caribbean converts (with historical ties to the Nation of Islam and later mainstream Sunni reorientation) and recent immigrants from the Indian subcontinent and the Levant. The Islamic Mission of Belize, established in the 1990s, operates the principal masjid in Belize City. There is no state Islamic authority, and the community is too small to support a formal Islamic school. The country's English-speaking environment and proximity to both the Caribbean and Central America has shaped a distinctive bilingual community character. eSalah uses the Muslim World League default for Belize, consistent with Caribbean and Central American regional practice; the ISNA method is offered as an alternate given proximity to and educational ties with the United States. The community maintains links with Trinidadian and U.S. mosque networks for halal provisions and religious education.
