Bulgaria has a Muslim community of approximately 10 to 13 percent of the population, or roughly 700,000 to 900,000 people, the largest Muslim minority in the European Union by share. The community is predominantly composed of ethnic Turks (about two-thirds), Bulgarian-speaking Pomaks, and Roma Muslims. Islam in Bulgaria is rooted in five centuries of Ottoman rule (1396–1878), and the community is overwhelmingly Sunni of the Hanafi school with a small but distinctive Alevi (Kazılbaş) presence in the northeast. The Tombul Mosque in Shumen, built in 1744 by Sherif Halil Pasha, is the largest Ottoman-era mosque in the country. The Banya Bashi Mosque in Sofia, built in 1576 to a design attributed to Mimar Sinan, remains the only functioning mosque in the capital. The Grand Mufti's Office (Glaven Myuftiystvo) is the recognized religious authority and oversees about 1,200 mosques nationwide. eSalah uses the Muslim World League default; the Diyanet method is offered as an alternate.
