Burkina Faso is a Muslim-majority country with approximately 63 percent of the population identifying as Muslim, predominantly Sunni of the Maliki school with a strong Tijaniyya and Qadiriyya Sufi presence. Islam arrived through trans-Saharan trade routes from at least the eleventh century and was reinforced in the colonial and post-colonial periods. The Grand Mosque of Bobo-Dioulasso, with its distinctive Sudano-Sahelian mud-brick architecture and wooden buttresses, dates in its current form to 1880 and is one of West Africa's most photographed mosques. The Grand Mosque of Ouagadougou serves as the principal congregational mosque of the capital. The Communauté Musulmane du Burkina Faso (CMBF), founded in 1962, is the principal national federation, alongside the Mouvement Sunnite, which represents the reform-oriented Salafi-leaning current. eSalah uses the Muslim World League default for Burkina Faso, appropriate for Maliki-Sahelian practice; the Algerian and Egyptian methods are offered as regionally-tested alternates.
