Burundi has a small Muslim community estimated at approximately 2 to 5 percent of the population, with figures contested between official sources and community organizations. The community is concentrated in Bujumbura and along the Lake Tanganyika trade corridor, with origins in the late nineteenth-century Swahili trading network from Zanzibar and Tanganyika. The community is predominantly Sunni of the Shafi'i school, reflecting the East African coastal tradition. The Jumua Mosque in Bujumbura serves as the principal congregational center. The Communauté Islamique du Burundi (COMIBU) is the recognized national body and represents Burundian Muslims in dealings with the state, including chaplaincy and the recognition of Islamic holidays. Burundian Muslims have historically played a notable role as commercial intermediaries and have been disproportionately affected by political instability over the past three decades; the community is small enough that no Islamic university or major madrasah operates within the country. eSalah uses the Muslim World League default for Burundi, appropriate for the East African Shafi'i tradition.
