Muslim World League · Capital: Yaoundé · 13 regions indexed
Cameroon has a Muslim community of approximately 24 percent of the population, concentrated in the three northern regions (Far North, North, and Adamawa) with significant communities in the major southern cities of Yaoundé, Douala, and Bafoussam. The community is overwhelmingly Sunni of the Maliki school with a strong Tijaniyya Sufi presence; the Fulani (Peul) ethnic group constitutes the demographic majority of Cameroonian Muslims and was central to the nineteenth-century Sokoto-affiliated jihad of Modibbo Adama (after whom Adamawa is named) that established Islamic governance across much of the north. The Lamidat of Ngaoundéré and the Lamidat of Garoua remain important traditional Islamic chieftaincies. The Grand Mosque of Yaoundé and the Centra Mosque in Maroua serve as principal urban congregational centers. The Cameroon Islamic Cultural Association (Association Culturelle Islamique du Cameroun) is the principal national umbrella body. eSalah uses the Muslim World League default for Cameroon; the Algerian method is offered as a regionally-tested Sahel alternate.
