Chad is a Muslim-majority country with approximately 55 percent of the population identifying as Muslim, predominantly Sunni of the Maliki school with a strong Tijaniyya, Qadiriyya, and Sammaniyya Sufi presence. The community is concentrated in the central, northern, and eastern regions of the country and is composed of multiple ethnic groups including the Arab (Baggara and other), Kanembu, Kanuri, Toubou, Hausa, Maba, and Wadai (Maba), all of whom have been Islamized through centuries-long trans-Saharan trade and the influence of the medieval Kanem-Bornu Empire and the seventeenth- and eighteenth-century Wadai and Bagirmi sultanates. The Faisal Mosque (King Faisal Mosque) in N'Djamena, opened in 1979 with Saudi funding, is the largest mosque in the country and the principal congregational center of the capital; the historic mosque in Mao (the former capital of the Kanem Sultanate) and the mosques of Abéché serve as significant regional centers. The High Council of Islamic Affairs (Conseil Supérieur des Affaires Islamiques du Tchad) is the principal national body. eSalah uses the Muslim World League default for Chad; Algerian method is alternate.
