Chile has a small Muslim community estimated at approximately 0.05 to 0.1 percent of the population, numbering roughly 4,000 to 6,000 adherents in a country of nearly 20 million. The community is composed of Levantine Arab descendants (predominantly Palestinian Christian-origin migrants make up the larger Arab community, but a Sunni and a small Shia Muslim component date to the same migration waves of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries), more recent Pakistani and Iranian residents, and a notable Chilean convert population. The Mezquita As-Salam in Santiago, opened in 1995, is the principal Sunni mosque; the Centro Islámico Bilal in Santiago and the small community in Iquique serve regional needs. The Sociedad Unión Musulmana de Chile is the principal national body. There is no state Islamic authority, and the community is too small to support a formal Islamic school within Chile. eSalah uses the Muslim World League default for Chile, consistent with Latin American practice. Most observant families travel to Argentina or Brazil for major Islamic life-cycle events and educational opportunities.
