Comoros is a Muslim-majority country with approximately 98 percent of the population identifying as Muslim, predominantly Sunni of the Shafi'i school with a strong Sufi presence including the Qadiriyya, Shadhiliyya (especially the Yashrutiyya branch), and Rifa'i orders. Sunni Islam is the state religion, and the country's geographic position in the Indian Ocean has made it a long-standing crossroads of Arab, East African Swahili, and Malagasy Islamic networks. Islam arrived in the islands from at least the eighth or ninth century through Arab and Persian Indian Ocean trade. The Ancient Friday Mosque (Ancienne Mosquée du Vendredi) in Moroni, originally built in 1427 and rebuilt in subsequent centuries, is among the oldest surviving mosques in East Africa. The Grand Mosquée du Vendredi in Moroni is the largest active congregational center. The Mufti's Office of the Comoros (Grand Mufti de la République des Comores) is the principal religious authority. The country is a member of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation. eSalah uses the Muslim World League default for the Comoros, consistent with East African Shafi'i practice.
