Djibouti is a Muslim-majority country with approximately 94 percent of the population identifying as Muslim, predominantly Sunni of the Shafi'i school with a strong Sufi presence including the Qadiriyya, Ahmadiyya (Idrisiyya, distinct from the messianic Ahmadiyya movement), and Salihiyya orders. Islam is the state religion under the constitution, and the country's geographical position on the Bab-el-Mandeb strait has historically connected it to Yemeni and Hejazi Islamic networks across the Red Sea. The community is composed primarily of Somali Issa, Afar, and Yemeni-origin populations. The Hamoudi Mosque in Djibouti City, originally constructed in 1906 and rebuilt several times, is the city's oldest mosque and a focal point of the colonial-era and modern community. The Abdulhamid II Mosque, opened in 2019 with Turkish state funding, is the largest mosque in the country. The Ministry of Islamic Affairs and Awqaf is the state body overseeing religious life. eSalah uses the Muslim World League default for Djibouti; the Egyptian-bis method is offered as an alternate given Red Sea connections.
