The Dominican Republic has a small Muslim community estimated at approximately 0.02 percent of the population, numbering roughly 2,000 to 4,000 adherents. The community is composed primarily of Levantine Arab descendants (Lebanese, Syrian, and Palestinian) who migrated in the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries, more recent Pakistani and Bangladeshi residents, and a notable Dominican convert population. The Centro Islámico Dominicano in Santo Domingo, established in the 1990s, operates the principal masjid in the country. There is no state Islamic authority, and the community is too small to support a formal Islamic school. eSalah uses the Muslim World League default for the Dominican Republic, consistent with Caribbean and Latin American regional practice; the ISNA method is offered as an alternate given proximity to and educational ties with North American Muslim networks. The community maintains links with Puerto Rican, U.S. mainland, and Cuban Islamic networks for halal certification, religious education, and Eid coordination, and major life-cycle events are often conducted in coordination with the Florida-based Muslim networks.
