France has the largest Muslim community in Western Europe, estimated at approximately 8 to 10 percent of the population, or roughly 5.7 to 6.5 million people, with the precise figure subject to debate given French census restrictions on religious data collection. The community is drawn predominantly from North African (Algerian, Moroccan, Tunisian) migrant origin, with substantial Sub-Saharan African (Senegalese, Malian, Mauritanian), Turkish, Comorian, and Levantine populations, and a growing native French convert contingent. The community is concentrated in Île-de-France, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, and Hauts-de-France. The Grande Mosquée de Paris, opened in 1926 in honor of Muslim soldiers who died for France in World War I, is the oldest major mosque and the historical seat of the Rector of Paris. The Grande Mosquée d'Évry-Courcouronnes is among the largest in mainland France. The Conseil Français du Culte Musulman (CFCM), founded in 2003, has been the principal interlocutor with the state, succeeded in 2022 by the Forum de l'Islam de France. eSalah uses the UOIF method for French cities.
