The Gambia is a Muslim-majority country with approximately 96 percent of the population identifying as Muslim, predominantly Sunni of the Maliki school with a strong Tijaniyya, Qadiriyya, and Muridiyya Sufi presence. The community is composed of multiple ethnic groups including the Mandinka (the largest), Fula (Pulaar/Fulani), Wolof, Jola (with both Muslim and Christian sections), and Serahuli, all of whom have been Islamized through the centuries-long expansion of trans-Saharan Islamic networks linked to the empires of Mali and Songhai. The King Fahad Mosque in Banjul, opened in 1988 with Saudi funding and rebuilt and expanded subsequently, is the largest mosque in the country and a major architectural landmark of the capital. The Supreme Islamic Council of The Gambia is the principal national body and works closely with the National Council for Civic Education on interfaith matters. The country is a member of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation. eSalah uses the Muslim World League default for The Gambia, appropriate for the West African Maliki tradition; the Algerian method is offered as a regionally-tested alternate.
