Greece has a Muslim community of approximately 4 to 5 percent of the population, or roughly 450,000 to 600,000 people, comprising two main groups: the historically established Muslim minority of Western Thrace (predominantly Pomak, Turkish, and Roma Muslims, recognized under the 1923 Treaty of Lausanne and numbering approximately 100,000 to 120,000), and more recent migrant communities of Albanian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi, Egyptian, Syrian, and Iraqi origin in Athens, Thessaloniki, and other urban centers. The Western Thrace community is overwhelmingly Sunni of the Hanafi school, governed under a special legal framework that includes the appointment of Muftis with civil jurisdiction over family law matters for the recognized minority. The Athens Mosque (the Athens Votanikos Mosque), opened in 2020, was the first state-built mosque in Athens since the Greek War of Independence in 1832 — making the Greek capital the only EU capital that lacked a purpose-built mosque for nearly two centuries. The Mufti's Office of Komotini and Xanthi serves the Western Thrace community. eSalah uses the MWL default; Diyanet method is alternate.
