Guatemala has a small Muslim community estimated at less than 0.1 percent of the population, numbering approximately 1,500 to 2,500 adherents. The community is concentrated in Guatemala City and is composed of Levantine Arab descendants (Lebanese, Palestinian, and Syrian) who migrated in the early to mid-twentieth century, more recent Pakistani residents, and a notable Guatemalan convert population. The Centro Islámico de Guatemala in the capital, established in the 1980s and expanded in subsequent decades, operates the country's principal mosque, the Mezquita Da'wah. The community has also been active in the Spanish-language Islamic publishing and educational efforts through the Cultural Centro Islámico. There is no state Islamic authority, and the community is too small to support a formal Islamic school within Guatemala. eSalah uses the Muslim World League default for Guatemala, consistent with Central American regional practice; the ISNA method is offered as an alternate given proximity to and educational ties with the United States. The community maintains links with Mexican, Honduran, and Floridian Muslim networks.
