Guinea-Bissau has a Muslim community of approximately 45 to 50 percent of the population, the largest single religious community in the country (followed by Christianity and traditional African religions). The community is concentrated in the eastern and northern regions, particularly in Bafatá and Gabú, and is composed primarily of Fula (Fulani/Pulaar) and Mandinka ethnic groups, with strong historical ties to the medieval and colonial-era Islamic networks of the wider Senegambia. The community is overwhelmingly Sunni of the Maliki school with a strong Tijaniyya, Qadiriyya, and Hamalliyya Sufi presence. The Mosque of Bafatá and the Grand Mosque of Bissau serve as principal congregational centers. The Comunidade Islâmica da Guiné-Bissau is the principal national body. There is no Islamic university operating within the country, and most advanced religious education is pursued in Senegal, Egypt, or the Gulf. eSalah uses the Muslim World League default for Guinea-Bissau, consistent with West African Maliki practice; the Algerian method is offered as a regionally-tested alternate.
