Haiti has a small Muslim community estimated at less than 0.1 percent of the population, numbering perhaps 3,000 to 8,000 adherents. The community is composed primarily of Haitian converts, with origins reaching back to the substantial number of West African Muslims (predominantly Mandinka, Fulani, and Wolof) who were enslaved and brought to colonial Saint-Domingue from Senegambia and the Bight of Benin in the eighteenth century — although that historical Muslim presence was largely erased through forced Catholicization and was not continuously maintained. The contemporary community is largely the result of conversions from the late twentieth century onward, alongside a smaller component of recent African and Middle Eastern migrants. The Mosquée At-Tawhid in Port-au-Prince and a small number of other mosques in Cap-Haïtien and Gonaïves serve the community. There is no state Islamic authority. eSalah uses the Muslim World League default for Haiti, consistent with broader Caribbean regional practice. The community maintains ongoing links with Dominican, Trinidadian, and U.S.-based Muslim networks for religious education and resources.
