Hungary has a small Muslim community estimated at approximately 0.4 percent of the population, numbering roughly 35,000 to 50,000 people. The community has notable historical depth: parts of Hungary were under Ottoman rule from 1541 to 1699, leaving an architectural legacy of mosques, baths, and tombs, though the contemporary Muslim community is predominantly the result of post-1989 migration from the Balkans, Turkey, the Middle East (particularly Iran, Iraq, Syria), South Asia, and North Africa, with a small native Hungarian convert population. The Tomb of Gül Baba in Budapest, dated to 1543–1548 and the burial place of an Ottoman Bektashi dervish, remains one of the northernmost officially recognized Islamic pilgrimage sites in Europe. The Magyarországi Muszlimok Egyháza (Hungarian Islamic Community) and the Magyar Iszlám Közösség are the principal registered Islamic organizations, with Islam having received state recognition under the 2011 Religion Law as one of the historical churches. eSalah uses the Muslim World League default for Hungary; the Diyanet method is offered as an alternate given Turkish heritage and current congregational composition.
