Iran is a Muslim-majority country in which Twelver Shia Islam (Ja'fari jurisprudence) is the official state religion under the 1979 constitution. Approximately 99.4 percent of the population is Muslim, of whom roughly 90 to 95 percent are Twelver Shia and 5 to 10 percent are Sunni (predominantly Kurdish, Baluchi, Turkmen, and Arab populations of the northwestern, eastern, and southern peripheries). Iran is home to many of the foundational shrines and learning centers of Shia Islam: the Shrine of Imam Reza in Mashhad, the burial place of the eighth Twelver Imam, is the largest mosque complex in the world by area and a destination for over 25 million pilgrims annually; the Shrine of Fatima al-Masumeh in Qom adjoins the Hawza al-Ilmiyya of Qom, one of the principal Shia seminaries in the world. The Office of the Supreme Leader and the Assembly of Experts are constitutional bodies central to the religious-political system. eSalah uses the Tehran/Jafari method (Fajr 17.7°, Isha 14°, midnight via the standard Jafari rule) for Iranian cities. Iran is flagged for sectarian sensitivity in §8 review.
