Iraq is a Muslim-majority country with approximately 95 to 98 percent of the population identifying as Muslim, comprising a Twelver Shia majority of roughly 60 to 65 percent and a Sunni minority of roughly 30 to 35 percent (predominantly Hanafi and Shafi'i). The country contains some of the most important sites in Islamic history. The Imam Ali Shrine in Najaf, the burial place of the fourth caliph and first Shia Imam Ali ibn Abi Talib, and the Imam Husayn Shrine in Karbala, the burial place of his son Husayn ibn Ali, are among the most significant pilgrimage destinations in Shia Islam, drawing over 20 million visitors annually for the Arba'een commemoration. Najaf is also home to the Hawza al-Ilmiyya, the principal Shia seminary, currently led by the Marja al-Taqlid Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani. The Al-Kadhimiya Mosque in Baghdad and the Al-Askari Shrine in Samarra are also major Shia sites; the Abu Hanifa Mosque honors the founder of the Hanafi school. eSalah uses the Egyptian-bis method for Iraqi cities, the conventional Levantine parameters. Iraq is flagged for sectarian sensitivity in §8 review.
