Najaf is the foremost seat of Twelver Shia scholarship, organized around the Shrine of Imam Ali ibn Abi Talib, the Prophet's cousin and son-in-law, fourth caliph of Sunni tradition and first Imam of Shia tradition, whose burial here was identified in the late eighth century. The shrine's golden dome, twin minarets, and silver-doored sanctuary have been embellished by the Buyids, Safavids, and most recently the Qajars and contemporary Iraqi state, drawing pilgrims year-round and especially during the Eid al-Ghadir commemorations. The Hawza of Najaf, a network of seminaries traditionally led by the city's grand ayatollahs, has trained Shia jurists for over a millennium and remains the principal traditional alternative to Qom in shaping Shia legal and theological thought. Najaf is also home to the vast Wadi al-Salam cemetery, one of the largest in the world, where Shia Muslims from many countries are buried close to the Imam.
