Italy has a Muslim community of approximately 4.9 percent of the population, or roughly 2.9 million people, drawn predominantly from Moroccan, Albanian, Tunisian, Senegalese, Egyptian, Bangladeshi, and Pakistani migrant origin, with a smaller native Italian convert population. The community is concentrated in Lombardy, Lazio, Emilia-Romagna, Piedmont, and Veneto. Italy has a deep historical Islamic legacy from the Emirate of Sicily (831–1091) and the long contact between the Italian maritime republics and the Islamic Mediterranean. The Mosque of Rome (Moschea di Roma), opened in 1995 in the Parioli district and built with Saudi funding, is the largest mosque in the European Union and a major architectural achievement; the Catania, Milan, and Turin mosques serve substantial regional congregations. Italy has not yet concluded a state-level intesa (concordat) with any Islamic federation, leaving Islam in a comparatively unrecognized legal position relative to other religions in Italy. The Unione delle Comunità Islamiche d'Italia (UCOII) and the Coreis are among the principal national bodies. eSalah uses the Muslim World League default for Italy.
