Kazakhstan is a Muslim-majority country with approximately 70 percent of the population identifying as Muslim per the 2021 census, predominantly Sunni of the Hanafi school. The Kazakh ethnic majority has been Muslim since the gradual Islamization that intensified in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, building on earlier Sufi networks (especially the Yasawiyya order founded by the twelfth-century Turkic poet and Sufi master Khoja Ahmad Yasawi, whose mausoleum in Turkestan is a UNESCO World Heritage site and the most important Islamic monument in Central Asia). The Mausoleum of Khoja Ahmad Yasawi was commissioned by Timur (Tamerlane) in 1389 and remains a pilgrimage destination drawing hundreds of thousands annually. The Hazret Sultan Mosque in Astana, opened in 2012, is the largest mosque in Central Asia, accommodating up to 10,000 worshippers. The Spiritual Administration of Muslims of Kazakhstan (DUMK), based in Almaty and led by the Supreme Mufti, is the principal religious authority. eSalah uses the Muslim World League default for Kazakhstan; users may also choose the Diyanet method given Turkic heritage.
