Kenya has a Muslim community of approximately 11 percent of the population per the 2019 census, numbering roughly 5.5 million people, concentrated along the coast (the Swahili coast from Lamu to Mombasa), in the northeast (Garissa, Wajir, Mandera — predominantly ethnic Somali), and in the major cities of Nairobi and Kisumu. The community is overwhelmingly Sunni of the Shafi'i school along the coast (reflecting the centuries-old Indian Ocean Swahili Islamic tradition) and Hanafi/Shafi'i in inland communities, with smaller Twelver Shia and Ismaili (Bohra and Khoja) populations of South Asian origin. The Old Town of Lamu, a UNESCO World Heritage site, contains the Riyadha Mosque and the historic Khalifa Mosque; the Friday Mosque of Mombasa and the Jamia Mosque of Nairobi are the principal urban centers of worship. The Supreme Council of Kenya Muslims (SUPKEM) is the principal umbrella body. The country also hosts the Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Mosque in Mombasa, opened in 2018 with UAE funding. eSalah uses the Muslim World League default for Kenya.
