South Korea has a small Muslim community estimated at approximately 0.4 percent of the population, numbering roughly 200,000 people including foreign workers and students. The community has a distinctive origin story: the first major wave of Korean conversions to Islam occurred during the Korean War (1950–1953) through contact with Turkish soldiers serving in the United Nations forces, and the Korea Muslim Federation was founded in 1967. The community is composed of approximately 30,000 to 40,000 Korean Muslims and a much larger expatriate component including Indonesians, Pakistanis, Bangladeshis, Uzbeks, Egyptians, Saudis, and Malaysians. The Seoul Central Mosque in Itaewon, opened in 1976 with Saudi funding, was the first purpose-built mosque in Korea and remains the principal congregational center. Mosques have since been opened in Busan, Daegu, Gwangju, Jeonju, and several university towns. The Korea Muslim Federation is the principal national body. eSalah uses the Muslim World League default for South Korea; the Kemenag-Indonesia and Karachi methods are offered as alternates for the large Indonesian and South Asian expatriate communities.
