Kuwait is a Muslim-majority country in which Islam is the state religion under the constitution. Approximately 74 percent of the total population is Muslim when including expatriates, with a higher figure (95 to 100 percent) among Kuwaiti citizens. The Kuwaiti Sunni majority follows the Maliki and Hanbali schools predominantly, with a substantial Twelver Shia minority of roughly 25 to 30 percent of citizens. The Grand Mosque of Kuwait City, opened in 1986 and the largest mosque in the country, has a capacity of over 10,000 worshippers; the historic Al-Khamis Mosque in the same city was a focal point of community life under the Al Sabah ruling family from the eighteenth century onward. The Ministry of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs oversees the country's roughly 1,500 mosques, and the Awqaf Public Foundation manages religious endowments and community programs. The Diwan of the Crown Prince has historically maintained close ties with senior religious scholars. eSalah uses the Kuwait Awqaf method (Fajr 18°, Isha 17.5°) for Kuwaiti cities, the official Ministry-published parameters.
