Kyrgyzstan is a Muslim-majority country with approximately 88 to 90 percent of the population identifying as Muslim, predominantly Sunni of the Hanafi school with a small Sufi presence (especially the Naqshbandi order in the Fergana Valley) and a tiny Ahmadiyya community. The country has historically practiced a relatively tolerant and syncretic form of Islam blended with pre-Islamic Turkic and shamanic traditions, though revivalist currents have grown since independence in 1991. The Central Mosque of Bishkek (the Imam Sarahsi Mosque), opened in 2018 with Turkish state funding, is the largest mosque in Central Asia outside Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan, accommodating up to 30,000 worshippers across its complex. The Uzgen Architectural Complex in southwestern Kyrgyzstan (eleventh to twelfth centuries) contains a Karakhanid-era minaret and mausoleum that are among the oldest surviving Islamic monuments in the country. The Spiritual Administration of Muslims of Kyrgyzstan (Muftiate) is the principal religious authority. eSalah uses the Muslim World League default for Kyrgyzstan; the Diyanet method is offered as an alternate given Turkic heritage.
