Liberia has a Muslim community of approximately 12 to 20 percent of the population, with estimates varying significantly between Pew, government, and community sources. The community is concentrated in Lofa, Bong, and Nimba counties in the north, in Monrovia, and along trade routes connecting to Guinea and Sierra Leone, and is composed primarily of the Mandingo (Mandinka), Fula (Fulani), and Vai ethnic groups. The Vai are notable as the inventors of an indigenous syllabic writing script in the early nineteenth century, used in part to record Islamic religious texts. The community is overwhelmingly Sunni of the Maliki school with a strong Tijaniyya, Qadiriyya, and Mouride Sufi presence reflecting the wider West African Islamic landscape. The Centra Mosque (Mosque of Monrovia) and the Vai Town Mosque serve as principal congregational centers in the capital. The National Muslim Council of Liberia is the principal national umbrella body, alongside the Liberia Muslims' Union. eSalah uses the Muslim World League default for Liberia; the Algerian method is offered as a regionally-tested West African alternate.
