Macao has a small Muslim community estimated at approximately 0.4 to 1 percent of the population, numbering roughly 3,000 to 7,000 adherents in a Special Administrative Region of China with approximately 670,000 residents. The community is composed of Indonesian and Filipino domestic workers, Pakistani and Bangladeshi traders and professionals, and a small native Chinese Hui Muslim contingent. The Macau Mosque, originally built in 1864 by the Indian Muslim community in the Mong Há district and rebuilt in 1986, is the only purpose-built mosque in Macao and serves as the principal congregational center for Friday prayers. The Islamic Society of Macau is the principal national umbrella body. The community is small enough that it does not yet have a formal Islamic school, halal certification authority, or Islamic university operating within the territory; major life-cycle events are typically conducted in coordination with the larger Hong Kong and mainland Chinese Muslim networks. eSalah uses the Muslim World League default for Macao, consistent with East Asian regional practice; the Karachi method and Kemenag-Indonesia method are offered as alternates given community composition.
