Madagascar has a Muslim community of approximately 3 to 7 percent of the population, with significant variation between Pew (around 3 percent) and community estimates (up to 10 percent). The community is concentrated in the northern and northwestern coastal regions (Mahajanga, Antsiranana, Nosy Be, and the Sava region) and in Antananarivo, and is composed of three principal groups: the Antakarana and Antaimoro (indigenous coastal Malagasy with centuries of Islamic heritage), the Indo-Pakistani Karana community (predominantly Gujarati Sunni and Khoja Ismaili Shia who settled during the colonial period), and Comorian and Yemeni-origin migrants. The community is predominantly Sunni of the Shafi'i school, reflecting Indian Ocean Swahili and Yemeni networks, with a notable Khoja Ismaili Shia minority of South Asian origin. The Mosquée Hassan II in Mahajanga and several historic mosques in Antsiranana serve as principal congregational centers. The Conseil National Islamique de Madagascar is the principal national umbrella body. eSalah uses MWL default for Madagascar.
