Malawi has a Muslim community of approximately 13.8 percent of the population per the 2018 census, numbering roughly 2.6 million people, concentrated along the lakeshore and in the southern districts (especially Mangochi, Machinga, Balaka, and the lakeshore towns). The community is overwhelmingly Sunni of the Shafi'i school, reflecting centuries-old Indian Ocean Swahili Islamic networks that brought Islam to the region from the East African coast through Yao, Swahili, and Arab traders from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries onward. The Yao ethnic group, who number approximately 14 percent of the Malawian population, is predominantly Muslim and was historically central to the spread of Islam in the southern lakeshore region. The Wakil al-Walid Mosque in Mangochi and the Mosque of Lilongwe serve as principal congregational centers. The Muslim Association of Malawi (MAM) is the principal national umbrella body. The country is a member of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation. eSalah uses the Muslim World League default for Malawi, consistent with East African Shafi'i practice.
