Malaysia is a Muslim-majority country with approximately 63.5 percent of the population identifying as Muslim per the 2020 census, predominantly Sunni of the Shafi'i school. Islam is the official state religion under the constitution, and the constitutional definition of a Malay (the country's largest ethnic group) requires Muslim identity. The community is composed predominantly of ethnic Malays alongside smaller Indian Muslim, Chinese Muslim, and Bumiputera (indigenous Bornean) Muslim communities. Malaysia has a sophisticated dual legal system in which Sharia courts handle family and personal law matters for Muslims while a parallel civil court system handles other matters. The National Mosque (Masjid Negara) in Kuala Lumpur, opened in 1965 with its distinctive 18-pointed star roof and 73-meter minaret, is the principal national mosque; the Putra Mosque in Putrajaya, opened in 1999 with its rose-tinted granite, is among the most photographed in Southeast Asia. The Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (JAKIM) is the federal Islamic authority. eSalah uses the JAKIM Malaysia method (Fajr 20°, Isha 18°), the official authority parameters.
