The Maldives is a Muslim-majority country in which Sunni Islam is the official state religion under the constitution, and citizenship is constitutionally restricted to Muslims (a unique provision worldwide). Approximately 100 percent of the citizen population is Muslim, predominantly Sunni of the Shafi'i school. The Maldives converted to Islam in 1153 CE under King Dhovemi (who took the title Sultan Muhammad al-Adil) following the missionary work of a Moroccan or Persian scholar named Yusuf Shamsuddin (Abu al-Barakat al-Barbari), an event commemorated annually as Fathuruveri Dhuvas. The Old Friday Mosque (Hukuru Miskiy) in Malé, built in 1656 with intricate coral stone carving, is among the most architecturally significant mosques in the Indian Ocean and has been nominated for UNESCO World Heritage status. The Grand Friday Mosque (Islamic Centre Mosque) in Malé, opened in 1984, is the largest in the country. The Ministry of Islamic Affairs is the state body overseeing religious life. eSalah uses the Muslim World League default for the Maldives, consistent with Shafi'i Indian Ocean practice; the Egyptian-bis method is offered as a regionally-tested alternate.
