Mali is a Muslim-majority country with approximately 95 percent of the population identifying as Muslim, predominantly Sunni of the Maliki school with a deeply rooted Tijaniyya, Qadiriyya, and Hamalliyya Sufi presence. The country contains some of the most historically significant Islamic sites in Sub-Saharan Africa: the city of Timbuktu, founded as a seasonal Tuareg encampment around 1100 and developed into a major center of Islamic scholarship under the Mali and Songhai empires from the thirteenth through sixteenth centuries, is home to the Djinguereber, Sankoré, and Sidi Yahya mosques, all UNESCO World Heritage sites and surviving examples of Sudano-Sahelian mud-brick architecture. The Sankoré Madrasah was a major center of Islamic learning, with manuscript libraries containing thousands of Arabic and Ajami works that survived through community efforts during the 2012 occupation. The Great Mosque of Djenné (rebuilt 1907 on a 13th-century foundation) is the largest mud-brick building in the world. The Haut Conseil Islamique du Mali is the principal national body. eSalah uses MWL default; the Algerian method is alternate.
