Mauritania is the Islamic Republic of Mauritania per its constitutional name, with approximately 99.9 percent of the population identifying as Muslim, predominantly Sunni of the Maliki school with the Ash'ari theological school and a strong Tijaniyya and Qadiriyya Sufi presence. The country has been Islamic since the eleventh-century Almoravid movement, which originated in the Senegal River basin region of present-day southern Mauritania under the leadership of Abdullah ibn Yasin and his disciple Yahya ibn Umar al-Lamtuni and went on to conquer Morocco and much of al-Andalus. The Chinguetti Mosque in the Adrar region, founded in the thirteenth century, is one of the most important Islamic sites in West Africa and historically the seventh holy city of Islam in some Maliki Sunni traditions; the Quranic libraries of Chinguetti and Ouadane preserve manuscripts dating to the medieval period. The Saudi Mosque of Nouakchott (the Grande Mosquée Saoudienne) is the principal urban congregational mosque. The Ministry of Islamic Affairs and Original Education oversees mosque administration. eSalah uses MWL default; Algerian method alternate.
