Moldova has a small Muslim community estimated at approximately 0.5 percent of the population, numbering roughly 15,000 to 17,000 adherents. The community is composed primarily of recent migrants and naturalized citizens from Azerbaijan, Turkey, the former Soviet Central Asian republics, the Middle East (particularly Syria, Iraq, and Lebanon), and South Asia, alongside a small native Moldovan convert population and the autonomous Christian Turkic Gagauz community (which is religiously distinct from Muslim Turkic peoples). The community is concentrated in Chișinău. The community is predominantly Sunni of the Hanafi school for the Turkic-origin contingent and Twelver Shia for the Azerbaijani contingent. The Islamic League of the Republic of Moldova was officially registered in 2011 after a years-long legal struggle, granting the community state recognition equivalent to other religions in the country. There is no purpose-built mosque, and the community uses converted-building masjids in Chișinău. eSalah uses the Muslim World League default for Moldova; the Diyanet method is offered for the Turkish-origin community and the Tehran method for the Azerbaijani Shia community.
