Mongolia has a Muslim community of approximately 3 to 5 percent of the population per the 2020 census, numbering roughly 100,000 to 175,000 people. The community is composed almost entirely of the ethnic Kazakh population concentrated in the western Bayan-Ölgii Province bordering China and Russia, where Kazakhs constitute the demographic majority and where Kazakh language and Islamic religious tradition have been continuously maintained since the migration of Kazakhs into the region from at least the eighteenth century. The community is overwhelmingly Sunni of the Hanafi school. The Central Mosque of Ölgii (the Bayan-Ölgii Province capital) and the Tsengel Mosque are principal congregational centers in the Kazakh region; smaller mosques operate in Ulaanbaatar. The Mongolian Muslims Association is the principal national umbrella body. There is no Islamic university operating within the country, and most advanced religious education is pursued in Kazakhstan, Turkey, or the Gulf. eSalah uses the Muslim World League default for Mongolia; the Diyanet method is offered as an alternate given Kazakh-Turkic heritage. Many Mongolian Kazakhs maintain close family and educational ties with Kazakhstan.
