Morocco is a Muslim-majority country with approximately 99 percent of the population identifying as Muslim, predominantly Sunni of the Maliki school, with the Ash'ari theological school and a strong Sufi tradition (especially the Tijaniyya, Qadiriyya, Boutchichiyya, and Shadhiliyya orders). The King of Morocco holds the title of Amir al-Mu'minin (Commander of the Faithful) and is the constitutional head of the country's religious establishment. Morocco contains numerous foundational sites: the Qarawiyyin Mosque and University in Fes, founded in 859 CE by Fatima al-Fihri, is recognized by UNESCO and the Guinness World Records as the world's oldest continuously operating university; the Hassan II Mosque in Casablanca, opened in 1993, is the largest mosque in Africa and second-largest in the world by some measures, with a 210-meter minaret that is the tallest religious structure in the world. The Ministry of Habous and Islamic Affairs oversees the country's mosque network and certifies all imams. The Mohammed VI Institute for the Training of Imams in Rabat trains scholars from across Africa and Europe. eSalah uses the Morocco Awqaf method.
