Mozambique has a Muslim community of approximately 18 to 19 percent of the population per the 2017 census, numbering roughly 5.8 million people, concentrated in the northern provinces of Cabo Delgado, Nampula, Niassa, and Zambezia, where Islam has been continuously present since the tenth century through Indian Ocean Swahili networks linking the coastal communities to Zanzibar, the Comoros, Yemen, and the wider Arab world. The community is overwhelmingly Sunni of the Shafi'i school with a strong Sufi presence including the Qadiriyya (especially the Yashrutiyya branch from Comoros and Zanzibar), Shadhiliyya, and Rifa'i orders. The Friday Mosque of Ilha de Moçambique (Mozambique Island), part of the UNESCO World Heritage site, is among the oldest functioning mosques in southern Africa. The Conselho Islâmico de Moçambique (CISLAMO) is the principal national umbrella body, alongside the Congresso Islâmico de Moçambique. The country has faced significant challenges in Cabo Delgado from a militant insurgency since 2017 (factual reference). eSalah uses the Muslim World League default for Mozambique.
