Myanmar has a Muslim community of approximately 4 percent of the population per the 2014 census, numbering roughly 2.2 million people; community estimates and pre-displacement figures suggest the actual share may have been higher before the mass displacement of the Rohingya population from Rakhine State. The community comprises three principal groups: the Rohingya (a Bengali-speaking Sunni Muslim community indigenous to northern Rakhine State, of whom over 740,000 fled to Bangladesh during the 2017 military operations documented by the UN Independent International Fact-Finding Mission as constituting genocide), the Bamar Muslims (Burmese-speaking Sunni Muslims integrated across central Myanmar), and Indian-origin Muslims (Pathi, Kaman, and Panthay Hui-origin) in Yangon, Mandalay, and other cities. The community is overwhelmingly Sunni of the Hanafi school. The Surti Sunni Jamah Mosque in Yangon and the Bengali Sunni Jamah Mosque are principal urban congregational centers. The Islamic Religious Affairs Council of Myanmar is the recognized national body. eSalah uses Karachi for the Muslim communities of Myanmar. FLAGGED FOR §8 REVIEW.
