Namibia has a small Muslim community estimated at approximately 0.5 to 1 percent of the population, numbering roughly 12,000 to 18,000 adherents. The community is composed of three principal groups: Cape Malay descendants who arrived under colonial-era labor migration from South Africa, South Asian (Gujarati, Pakistani) traders, and a growing native Namibian convert population, with a notable community among the Nama and Damara peoples. The community is predominantly Sunni of the Hanafi and Shafi'i schools. The Windhoek Islamic Centre and Mosque (Jamia Masjid Windhoek), opened in 1980 in the capital, is the principal congregational center. Smaller mosques operate in Walvis Bay, Swakopmund, Oshakati, and other regional centers. The Namibia Muslim Association is the principal national umbrella body. There is no state Islamic authority, and the community is too small to support an Islamic university or major madrasah within Namibia. eSalah uses the Muslim World League default for Namibia. The community maintains ongoing ties with the larger South African Muslim networks (especially the Jamiatul Ulama of South Africa and the Cape Town Muslim Judicial Council) for religious resources.
