The Netherlands has a Muslim community of approximately 5 to 7 percent of the population, or roughly 950,000 people, drawn predominantly from Turkish and Moroccan migrant origin (the two largest groups, descended from the 1960s–1970s labor recruitment programs), with substantial communities of Surinamese (predominantly Indo-Surinamese Hindustani Muslims), Indonesian (legacy of colonial-era migration from the former Dutch East Indies), Bosnian, Iraqi, Iranian, Afghan, Syrian, and Somali origin. The community is concentrated in the Randstad metropolitan area (Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague, Utrecht). The Westermoskee in Amsterdam, opened in 2016, and the Essalam Mosque in Rotterdam, opened in 2010, are among the largest in the country. The four-pillar coordinating body Contactorgaan Moslims en Overheid (CMO) is the principal interlocutor with the Dutch state. eSalah uses the Muslim World League default for the Netherlands; the Diyanet method is offered as an alternate given Turkish-origin congregations and the Kemenag-Indonesia method is offered for the substantial Indonesian-origin community.
